Brooke's Happy Tail ♥ Love at First (web)Site
When I first saw Brooke on the website, I was horrified at the condition she was in and the picture of her sitting in the shelter with her head hanging down. I knew being a senior black dog with skin problems she probably had little to no chance of being adopted.
As a lab lover and already the owner of five labs, of which four are rescues, I was immediately drawn to this sweet dog and set into action to find out more about her. A wonderful volunteer at Stark, Lynn Serri, was kind enough to work with me to ensure Brooke would be safe.
Lynn kept Brooke at her house overnight. The following day Lynn transported Brooke to a rescue where she remained for three weeks. Brooke needed to be vetted and get healthy enough to endure her spay surgery. After what seemed like forever, sweet Brookie arrived in Rhode Island via a paid ground transport.

Becoming a
Beautiful Black Diva
The photo at the top-left shows Brooke three weeks after being pulled from the shelter. Her head is still hanging and she is missing so much fur. When she arrived, I promised Brooke I would turn her into a black diva.
During the first month we had three visits to the emergency room for respiratory problems and mobility problems due to her aging muscles having had little activity for so long. We also had a visit to the veterinarian ophthalmologist to have a small growth in Brooke's eye removed. As you can see from the second photo above, Brooke's fur began to grow back nicely. She really was a work in progress.
All that is in the past now; Brooke is the Black Diva that I had promised she would become. Brooke is more than I could have hoped for. Her tail never stops wagging. We celebrated our first year together on August 13, 2008. I cannot imagine my life without her. Saving Brooke has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. She asks for so little but unconditionally gives so much to me every day.
Editor's Note: Brooke was being held in the Stark County Pound, sick and unloved when she was discovered by Joyce via the website. It really was love at first sight because Joyce decided at that moment that she would save, Brooke. Brooke now has a wonderful life in Rhode Island where she lives just five-minutes from the beach. Brooke's transformation is amazing; she went from unwanted and unhealthy, to the lively and loved surfer girl seen in the pictures above.
