Margie Serri1)  What is the history of Friends of the Pound?

As a member of the Coalition for Animal Concerns, Margie Serri (photo on the left) spent hundreds of dollars of her own money placing ads to find homes for homeless pets and she would go to the Stark County Dog Pound three or more times a week in order to take photos of the homeless dogs for the Petfinder.com website. Margie's perseverance and dedication has paid off.

2)  How did Friends of the Pound appear on the scene?

In November 2007, Christina Weyrick-Cooper, contacted Evert about helping with PR, volunteers, etc. She has recently moved back here from Columbus where she was volunteer coordinator/pr person for the Franklin County Humane Society. Now she is a stay at home mom and wanted to help us market the pound. She helped organize the first open house, got Margie on the radio and in the paper; after those events, Friends of the Pound started getting donations and more volunteers.

We started calling ourselves Friends of Stark Pound early in 2008. As Friends of Stark Pound, we know all money will go to care of the dogs. If money is donated to the pound itself, it goes into Stark County Dog Warden Department's General Fund; it can then in turn be used for anything the warden deems necessary. Margie started accepting sponsorship money in her own checking account; now it goes through Friends of the Pound.

3)  Do the Friends of the Pound have educational programs for the community?

If someone is interested in having an educational program, just contact, Margie Serri. Her program includes topics such as, spay/neuter, licensing, vetting, and behavior. Margie is willing to speak to anyone who will listen and she usually brings one of her own dogs that were rescued.

5)  On your Wish List you ask for food, medicine and comfort items for the dogs. Doesn't the county provide food, medicine and comfort for the dogs?

Thanks to all of the volunteers who love me.Starting December 2007, the county pays for the 5 way and bordetella. We get donated dry food from Wal–Mart, Sam's Club, etc (bags that break) but we don't have a regular supply of puppy or canned food. Seniors or dogs with bad teeth need canned food. All other medical care is from our fund.

We do not have a vet on staff, but thanks to our VERY generous vet, Dr. Soehnlen, we are able to obtain antibiotics, flea medications, etc at cost. The county also doesn't buy wormer; we buy that from PBS nor do they supply the bedding. The bedding is donated and maintained by the volunteers. It is washed and dried every day so it wears out quickly.

7)  Why must dogs be spayed or neutered before they are allowed to leave the pound?

Every year millions of adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized due to lack of cage space. Here is a link with some statistics. We are working to make it mandatory in Stark County that ANY animal being adopted from a shelter be fixed. http://www.nafacares.org/Spay%20Neuter/why_spay__neuter.htm#Statistics
